Tetsuo has the most outrageous love scene of all time in it.
And all the stop motion WILL kick your pale white ass. I had a friend who was re-scoring that movie with all sorts of industrial but i lost track of him before he finished the project. If i can find it you know I'll share. -------------------- ![]() Monkeys and Knobs. . . |

Here's a (rather long at 80 mins) interview with David Cronenberg for those who are interested in him as a film maker.
Videodrome was, and still is one of my favourite horror movies, ever since the first time I saw it on the shiny new family Sony Betamax vcr. http://www.altertube.tv/view_video.php?vie...edf3365fea7520f -------------------- We care a lot about you people

I saw Mongol.
quick review: Beautiful cinematography, music, costuming (minor complaints about some armor and weapons looking really fake), good acting. Horrible writing and directing. Reminded me of a Chinese Soap Opera. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0416044/ 2 stars out of 5 |

Hancock: Terrible. You could see how much potential this movie had but they really over-produced it and made all the right "safe" choices.
2 out of 5 Gonzo: The Life and Work of Hunter S. Thompson: It answered a lot of questions and put things in an order that made me understand his life better. 4 out of 5 This trailer for EAGLE EYE was interesting. Youtube Video ->

Yeah, went minature golfing today, too. That was cool. I wish they would have had the water fountains going. But, I guess there's a drought or something. I don't know. |

Watched a couple movies yesterday.
The Trial (1962), directed by Orson Welles. Based on the Kafka book. I'd also like to see the 1993 version with Kyle MacLachlan as Josef K, but haven't found it yet. Vanilla Sky. Just got around to seeing that one. It thought it was excellent. I'm going to watch Abre Los Ojos (Open Your Eyes) next, the Spanish film from which Vanilla Sky was adapted. -------------------- We care a lot about you people

Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter (2001)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0311361/ In this movie a modern Jesus protects Canadia lesbians from a new breed of vampires that can go out in daylight. Last week I watched The Happening, and the new Futurama movie, The Beast with a Thousand Backs. -------------------- |

Hancock : I agree, when I went to see that move I was under the impression it would be another 90 min session of Will Smith's martyr-complex being glorified.
...which I was totally cool with... Then it turns out the first five mins (MOVE BITCH!) was the only amazingly epic part that I haven't seen done in so many other movies. I won't ruin the rest for people who haven't seen it... but it really is something you can appreciate equally on your personal home theater system when it hits your favorite media viewing platform. -------------------- I am a man,

Last week I watched The Happening, and the new Futurama movie, The Beast with a Thousand Backs. Flack, was The Happening any good? I mean, even worth getting on DVD? -------------------- When things get really bad...when it seems like all of the world is against me...when I think I can't face even one more minute of one more day...I suddenly realize that I always have the option of not wearing any pants.

I thought The Happening was on par with a lot of Stephen King movies, meaning it was an interesting idea best suited for a short story and not a two-hour movie. A lot of King's short stories are kind of creepy but when taken to the big screen, look kind of silly (Maximum Overdrive, Christine, etc.) The Happening kind of reminded me of that. In the context of a short story it would be an interesting idea but as a two-hour film it got a little old and seemed a little silly.

I saw the Speed Racer movie the other day and thought it was a lot more enjoyable than the reviewers indicated. But we saw it with a 10-year-old kid, so maybe that affected the vibe. He thought one particular scene where the fat kid & monkey go flying through the air, all anime-action style & fight was the FUNNIEST THING EVER that we watched several times.
Also... Dr. Strangelove; which for some reason I'd never finished though started a half-dozen times. Super-swell. |

Speaking of _not_ watching a movie: I was about to get River's Edge (1986) which I saw back in the day when it came out, having been in the target audience at the time.
It's about a circle of alt./metalhead teen friends, and one of them kills his girlfriend and leaves her by the side of a river (hence the title). He shows the body to his friends and they freak/don't freak out and that's about it. Then, I was thinking... Why would I want to watch this huge bummer of a movie again? It's just a buncha kids being assholes. I'm not gonna learn anything from it, and I'm sure as hell not gonna enjoy it. Don't need this. Sometimes I feel like a lot of drama fits that category. Taking me on a ride to someplace I don't necessarily wanna go. --- The Happening - mostly liked it; but as Flack said it felt a bit stretched. I thought the love story was good - husband & wife, and adopted parents & kid. "Don't take my kid's hand unless you mean it!" was a good line when the woman was taking responsibility for the child from the soon-to-die dad. I also liked the creepy, mysterious tone. Some of the infection logic was confusing. |

I bought the dvd of 21, and liked it so-so (wish I'd rented it instead). It's just another young cast movie, but hey - at least it's not a young cast remake movie. Boston is pretty, Vegas is pretty, the boys and girls are pretty. I appreciated Kevin Spacey and Laurence Fishburne a lot more than any of the kids in the film.
Having watched the movie and read several articles over the years on the M.I.T. blackjack team, I went to the library this morning and found a History Channel documentary on the team called Breaking Vegas. I checked it out and when I opened the case later on in the day, there was no dvd inside! Nefarious bastards. Looks pretty interesting anyway. Regarding River's Edge, the only reasons to see it are 1) Crispin Glover is k-reepy and funny at the same time, and 2) Dennis Hopper is pretty believable as a crazy disabled veteran/pot dealer with an inflatable doll for a girlfriend. Everything else is pretty depressing and pointless. Now someone tell me why I should dig up a copy of My Own Private Idaho and watch that again, cuz it's nagging at me lately. Edit: the library replaced the Breaking Vegas dvd, and it's ten times as interesting and entertaining as the '21' movie. It's worth looking up.
Reason for edit: library

Watched No Country For Old Men this weekend, I totally got hooked up on the assassin's haircut - he looked like an ex Beatles member that had escaped from a mental institution. The breakin' through door-locks technique was absolutely hilarious. Cool movie in general!

I watched The Dark Knight last week, it was awesome! I was kinda disapointed with Batman Begins, but Christopher Nolan did an exellent job with this one. Heath Ledger's joker pissed all over Jack Nicholson's joker, and was simply one of the best movie villans I've ever seen. It really made me sad he's dead, he was a great actor. Oldman, Bale and Eckhart were also awesome. This was one of the best blockbusters I've seen and definetly the best comic book adaptation I've ever seen.
Speaking of comic book adaptations: check out the Watchmen trailer. It's being directed by Jack Snyder who also did the Dawn of the Dead "remake" and 300. While I liked those movies, they were pretty much mindless action flicks. They weren't exactly subtle or had any substance to them. Watchmen has lots of substance to it and is also very subtle. I sure hope Snyder will realize that doing the same thing he did with 300 will not work. But the fact that he seems to be using the same slow-motion effects isn't really getting my hopes up. It seems that most movies Hollywood produces these days are either sequels, remakes or adaptations of some book or comic or game. I just read that Tim Burton is doing an Alice in Wondeland movie adaptation, and being the always-super-original movie director that he is, he decided to cast Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter. I can't help but wonder what his nex totally unexpected move is going to be: perhaps casting Helena Bonham Carter, I'm sure nobody would see that coming. Oh and I also watched Anton Corbijn's "Control" yesterday. It had its flaws, but I really liked it. It actually managed to bring tears to my eyes and I can't even remember the last movie that did that for me. I do have to admit that I am a Joy Division fan so I guess that only makes sense. |

Everything else is pretty depressing and pointless. That movie has an odd vibe to it. Crispin Glover is super fucking annoying... I would have to beat some ass if any of those dipshits were my friends. Keanu Reeves and his girlfriend in the park have the classic line about getting high and having sex... Keanu Reeves says it in the most beautifully retarded way that I have to rewind it and play it back several times. The whole moral of the story is how retarded and worthless every character is - and that they should all be put to death for the good of civilization. I believe it's based on a 'true story', whatever that is supposed to mean. I forgot about how menacing and weird Dennis Hopper is in that though... he is a lovable old weirdo now. I really like that Gorillaz track with him on it. 'Fire shooting out of a monkeys head' or whatever.

Fresh (1994)
QUOTE Fresh (1994) is the debut film of writer and director Boaz Yakin. Set in the violent and gang-ridden projects of New York City, Fresh tells the story of Michael, nicknamed Fresh (portrayed by Sean Nelson), a 12-year old kid running drugs for the local drug lords, notably Esteban (Giancarlo Esposito). Inspired by the chess lessons of his father, an alcoholic speed-chess master (Samuel L. Jackson), Fresh devises and executes a brilliant plan to extricate himself and his drug addicted sister (N'Bushe Wright) from their hopeless lives (during the film, where Fresh was threatened to be sent to a group home after his best friend is murdered, is where he began to execute his plan). Marketed at the time as a hip hop 'hood film, Fresh went relatively unnoticed by the public, but won critical acclaim for being an intense and poetic drama working on different levels. It is both an emotional coming of age story and a realistic portrayal of the dangerous life in the projects - while at the same time the whole film can be seen as a metaphorical chess game. Fresh was produced by Lawrence Bender (seen in a cameo appearance), who at the time was riding the wave of success of Reservoir Dogs. It was scored by ex-member of The Police Stewart Copeland. Good stuff - we watched this again last night. The early '90s urban slang is funny too ("I got the dope moves, homie!"). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fresh_(film) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0109842/ |
