The Lion in the Winter.

The one with Peter O' Toole and Katherine Hepburn. Amazing dialouge and ensemble performances, including a very young Timothy Dalton and Anthony Hopkins.

DaYuM and I just saw Up in the Air and like it a lot:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Up_in_the_Air_(film)

It was swell how you're expecting the sappy ending where the lead gives up his solo lifestyle and "settles down" - denied!

---

I saw _The Class_ and dug it too:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Class_(2008_film)

French film, won lots of awards, 'bout a teacher and his classroom over a year. Helped me realize I wouldn't want to be a teacher.

---

...but we both really dug _The Box_
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Box_(2009_film)

...which didn't do so hot but I thought it was neat. Lots of possible interpretations; fun & fairly creepy.

---

We also saw the Cowboy Beebop movie finally , and were less than thrilled:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cowboy_Bebop:_The_Movie

I'm not a big anime guy, but I like some of everything. There was a lot of coolish stuff going on in this one, but I think the bad guy's dialogue was so cringe-inducing that it kinda blew it for us.

---

In Texas, Franken Gibe and I watched Willow (1988) for the first time:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Willow_(film)

...which totally sucked. So it's a kiddie movie; whatever, no excuse. Too much eye-rolling and laughing at the wrong times. Bleh. Ron Howard directing and George Lucas scriptwriting are a match made in uh, a toilet. Or a soup-bowl filled with feces.

---

but we also watched The Black Hole (Disney, 1979) which rules forever:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Black_Hole

and that's that!

I've always liked Willow. Good, senseless fun.

I was at a buddies house the other night and we watched a documentary called: the devil and Daniel Johnston

the director caught Johnston's story very well. If any of you have the time and the extra buck, I recommend this one.

Recently I saw a French film titled, Il y a longtemps que je t'aime.

A trailer in French ~~

Youtube Video -> Original Video

For a translation, please click here.

Also, I just remembered about a fantastic Japanese film, entitled イキガミ(Ikigami)
This film is incredibly moving - in a non-standard way.
Here is a short synopsis, taken from Wikipedia.

QUOTE
On the first day of year one, all Japanese students receive an inoculation. A small percentage of these inoculations includes a nano capsule which via radio-control will kill the receiver somewhere between the ages of 18-24. The government believes that the threat of unexpected death will increase prosperity and productivity in its citizens. And indeed this increased prosperity is evident, but at a great cost, innocent lives. Citizens who do not agree with the National prosperity law and who publicly voice their opinions are accused of "thought crime."

If you'd like to watch it, let me know. I'll send you a link.

g/f and I watched the pilot episode of Caprica the other day and liked it a lot. Hope the series continues at the same level.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caprica_(TV_series)

Also saw An Education, the coming-of-age story about an English schoolgirl in the early '60 which we also liked:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/film/2009/oct/29...ducation-review

World's Greatest Dad, by Bobcat Goldthwait and starring Robin Williams. It's pretty stunning how unappealing Williams and all the characters are, and we enjoyed this one quite a bit.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World's_Greatest_Dad

...and Robin Hood: Men in Tights. Wow, this was a bummer. I'm a big fan of Mel Brooks, but gaaah. Was Richard Lewis ever funny? I don't remember, and he's sure not doing anything here.

District 9; how do you define aliens? The movie evolves into a modern version of South Africa and its apartheid. A bit boring in the beginning, but in general a movie with splendid action and great effects.

Watched this for the first time about a week ago, and I concur. Very slow start, but it's a good movie over all.

Also, Sherlock Holmes anyone? I personally found this movie pretty well done. A little drawn out in a few places, especially near the end but overall, I would recommend watching it.

The Lovely Bones; terrible.. Did not like a single thing about this movie, other then the concept of the afterworld they portrayed. It was a nice attempt. Movie itself was generally pretty bad though :|

@Ratte: World's Greatest Dad was awesome. My roomie put it on, and I wasn't paying attention to it at first, then after a couple minutes I was sucked in. I laughed my ass off at the end of it.

@Sa1ty: Holy shit, Gary Shandling show? I forgot about that!

@gi.teisen: Throw that link at me pl0x, that sounds like a really good movie.

Werner Herzog's feature film FITZCARRALDO and documentary LITTLE DIETER NEEDS TO FLY.

FITZCARRALDO was dated mostly due to Klaus Kinski who was a little too over-the-top with his performance and his character seemed to exploit those around him for the fulfillment of his own dreams and visions a little too much for me. A happy ending but it kind of left me with a "so what?" feeling.

LITTLE DIETER NEEDS TO FLY was a fantastic documentary. Follows the story of a man that wanted to fly a plane his entire life and when he finally does, as a pilot over Vietnam, he is shot down and imprisoned by the Vietcong and then the NVA, he escapes, and...

Both pieces show how a man can overcome great odds in the service of a personal, and not necessarily selfish, dream.

Tough as nails, little crazy, both of them.

Jesus' Son

Really good movie. Well shot, well edited, and well written. Lots of cameos from a bunch of different actors. Billy Crudup is a little bit 2-dimensional but not too much.

Watched this recently. It doesn't really hold up very well but it's a very cool concept and reflects the zeitgeist of the early 70s. Gotta put up with subtitles, sorry.
